Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) is a condition where mast cells, immune cells that release immunity chemicals like histamine, become overly active and can trigger symptoms such as flushing, hives, facial rashes, gastrointestinal discomfort, joint pain, and brain fog; often without a clear trigger. This condition can sometimes be confused and misdiagnosed for non-serological Lupus or SLE.
Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is a form of autonomic dysfunction where heart rate increases excessively upon standing. People with POTS often experience dizziness, palpitations, or fainting when they move to an upright position. Emerging research suggests that MCAS and POTS may share overlapping biological mechanisms, such as immune activation, connective tissue differences, and autonomic nervous system dysregulation.
Additionally, some clinicians have observed overlap in patients with a third condition, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS). EDS is a genetic disorder characterized by easy bruising, hyper-flexibility, and velvety smooth skin. although we consult on all three conditions, often times EDS and POTs can require a cardiologist in which we can provide in your area.
Research shows the trifecta is more prominent in women and is typically "kicked on" by an external factor including infection, external chemicals and even hormones. Basically anything that stresses our bodies to the limit. The beautiful thing about this these terrifying conditions is we are seeing emerging treatments that are simple, affordable and safe.
